The DIAS required new accommodation for the School of Theoretical Physics at Burlington Road, to include a library, archives, conference room, reading room, tutorial rooms, professor and scholar’s rooms, and office suites for the director, registrar and administrative staff.

The provision of natural day-light whilst mitigating potential glare and solar gain was a major contributor to the final design: horizontal baffles were introduced into the windows just above eye level, resulting in an even distribution of light throughout the work spaces, preventing direct penetration of sun-light during the summer mid-morning to mid-afternoon periods.
